NIPSCO Faces Criticism as Indiana City Remains Without Power for Nearly Two Weeks

GARY, Indiana / RankWire.AI / — Thousand of residents in Lake County, Indiana, have endured an extended power outage for almost 14 days following severe weather damage. The incident was triggered by an August 11 derecho, which brought peak wind gusts of 99 miles per hour and resulted in the destruction of numerous infrastructure components. The storm left a trail of downed power poles and severed distribution lines, prompting criticism from municipal officials and community advocates over the sluggish recovery efforts and the unacceptable prolonged blackout in this US city as frustration among residents grows.

Unacceptable US city without power for nearly 2 weeks in Indiana
Utility line technicians perform emergency electrical repairs along damaged suburban roadways.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), the regional utility provider, reported that this storm caused the most extensive and complex damage event in its history, initially cutting power to more than 300,000 customers. While most affected areas have seen power restored, Gary remains the most severely impacted, with nearly 20,000 customers still without electricity late into the second week. Company officials explained that repairing the damage required replacing about 300 distribution poles and 44 high-voltage transmission structures within the city limits.

The prolonged outage has intensified public outrage as residents are left without air conditioning, refrigeration, or functioning traffic signals amid extreme summer heat. Emergency distribution centers have been providing ice, bottled water, and non-perishable meals to families dealing with spoiled food and compromised medical supplies. In response, Indiana Governor Mike Braun activated the Indiana National Guard to assist with disaster relief efforts, while the federal government authorized emergency aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Repair Operations Continue Amid Ongoing Power Outages for Thousands

The financial strain on local households has increased, as residents have spent hundreds of dollars on fuel for portable generators and traveled out of state to purchase ice and batteries. Local businesses in Gary, especially small retail stores and grocery outlets, have faced significant disruptions, forcing many to remain closed. Nevertheless, major industrial entities such as U.S. Steel at Gary Works have maintained core manufacturing activities through localized power grid setups.

Leaders of civil rights organizations and local officials have voiced concerns over the pace of infrastructure recovery in lower-income communities. NiSource Inc., the parent company of NIPSCO, dismissed claims of unequal resource distribution, asserting that repair prioritization was based solely on the physical severity of damage. Utility executives also confirmed that hundreds of mutual assistance linemen arrived from neighboring states to help accelerate the grid rebuilding process.

Emergency Agencies Coordinate Relief and Cooling Efforts Amid Continued Outages

While utility crews work toward full restoration, state regulators have announced that investigations into tree-trimming practices and system maintenance procedures will take place. Experts have pointed out that the widespread straight-line winds, combined with rain-saturated soil, caused mature trees to uproot and create cascading failures along overhead power lines. This event has sparked renewed national debate about modernizing power grids and the importance of burying distribution lines in areas prone to severe weather.

The incident has exposed ongoing vulnerabilities in municipal power distribution systems during extreme weather conditions. The fact that this US city has been without power for nearly two weeks has heightened frustration, prompting local leaders to call for long-term investments to prevent similar multi-week outages in future storm seasons. Over the coming months, state regulators are expected to review the utility’s emergency management strategies and infrastructure resilience standards to address these ongoing issues.
