OpenAI Eliminates Chat Limitations for Free and Go Users of ChatGPT

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is removing text chat restrictions for Free and Go users by expanding access under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text conversations will begin next week, with safeguards against misuse still in place. During this rollout, Luna is becoming the default model for these plans. At the same time, Free users will receive a new Think button, which enables the model to dedicate extra time to more complex questions before responding.

This increased allowance applies to standard text exchanges, but does not extend to all features within ChatGPT. Limits will still be in effect for image creation, file uploads, and other functions that require additional computational resources. OpenAI stated that the Think button will be available alongside unlimited text access next week. Users can enable it when a question needs more detailed reasoning. This change broadens the core conversational capabilities of ChatGPT for Free and Go accounts, while maintaining separate restrictions on other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 includes multiple models, such as Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed for different performance levels. Luna is the faster and more budget-friendly option within this lineup. According to OpenAI, approximately one billion people now use ChatGPT weekly for activities like research, planning, writing, and searching. With this update, Luna becomes the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. Other GPT-5.6 variants remain accessible within specific plans and applications tailored to various workload needs and access levels.

Expanded free access while tool restrictions stay in place

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro will now have access to an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model, optimized for routine tasks and more advanced reasoning. The company explained that Sol now delivers more targeted responses and minimizes unnecessary details when shorter answers suffice. Paid plans also introduce a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop interfaces. This feature allows users to control how much processing power the model applies to each request, aiding in research, coding, writing, planning, and other activities that benefit from varying levels of reasoning.

OpenAI shared results from internal tests focused on the factual accuracy of its newest models. These evaluations involved questions related to finance, medicine, and law that required detailed factual answers. The company reported about 62% fewer responses containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated an even greater reduction of around 68% under the same testing method. Additionally, OpenAI noted improved performance in handling dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details impacted the accuracy of the response.

New safeguards enhance protections for younger users

Safeguards have been added to the GPT-5.6 models to provide extra protection for users believed to be under 18. These include measures against romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that might encourage users to replace real-world relationships. Restrictions also cover sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. OpenAI mentioned that it has implemented additional assessments for responses involving younger users. The same abuse prevention measures will remain active when unlimited text conversations are available to Free and Go accounts with expanded ChatGPT access.

This rollout applies solely to the main ChatGPT service and does not affect other products utilizing GPT-5.6. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will remain unchanged as part of this update. Users subscribed to Plus and Pro can now access the updated Sol model along with the reasoning controls. For Free and Go accounts, Luna will serve as the default model this week. Unlimited conversations and the Think button will be available next week, with separate limits still in place for images, uploads, and other resource-heavy features.
