Trump’s Map Depicts US Flag Spanning Canada, Mexico, and Greenland

    September 8, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump shared an image on Truth Social that features the U.S. flag covering a large part of North America. The map portrays Canada, Mexico, and Greenland under a design labeled “United States of America,” with the U.S. flag extending across these regions. The graphic also includes Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. No accompanying explanation was provided by Trump in the post. It preserves geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

The map was posted at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 through Trump’s official Truth Social account. The post did not suggest any change in borders, treaties, or government policies. Canada and Mexico are still recognized as independent nations with established borders. Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland continues to be an independent nation. The image made no mention of any legal process that might alter the status of these countries or territories under the U.S. flag.

This map followed other geography-themed posts from the president in the same timeframe. Earlier images showed New Mexico’s name replaced with “New America,” and Trump also promoted “Lake America” as a new designation for Lake Ontario. His administration previously instructed federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.” Additionally, Trump has called for U.S. ownership of Greenland, despite Danish and Greenlandic authorities rejecting proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

Mexico Responds with Assertion of Sovereignty

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a statement reaffirming Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She emphasized that the country would not become a colony or protectorate of another nation. Her comments coincided with September’s celebrations of Mexico’s independence. The map placed Mexico beneath the same U.S. flag pattern seen over Canada and other regions. The post did not include any legal documents or bilateral agreements concerning the U.S.-Mexico border. Existing border arrangements remained unchanged after the post appeared.

The image also depicted Canada fully covered by the U.S. flag. Trump has previously floated the idea of Canada joining the United States. On September 7, he separately threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier unless it relocated production to the U.S. Meanwhile, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods after trade negotiations stalled. These trade measures are separate from the map post and do not impact Canada’s territorial or political status.

    Greenland Remains Under Danish Control

Greenland was prominently featured beneath the U.S. flag in the image. Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States should acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns. However, Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. ownership claims. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. This initiative includes support for digital connectivity, energy, education, and sustainable mining. Additionally, Denmark sent military personnel to Greenland in early September for Arctic training exercises.

The Truth Social post lacked any caption explaining its purpose or legal implications. It did not suggest any policy change, territorial transfer, or alteration of existing national borders. Mexico remains a sovereign nation, Canada continues as an independent state, Greenland functions as a self-governing territory within Denmark, and Iceland retains its independence. The image stands as a presidential social media post without any legal measure modifying the status of the territories depicted.
