Los Angeles Continues October with Near-Record Heat Levels Amidst Persistent Warmth

    October 7, 2026

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, Southern California experienced a continuation of an extraordinary October heat wave, with downtown Los Angeles reaching 101°F. This temperature marked the fifth consecutive day of triple-digit readings in the city center, underscoring the prolonged nature of the heat event. The National Weather Service maintained hazardous heat alerts across extensive areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, indicating the ongoing risk. Forecasters indicated that extreme heat warnings are expected to remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday. Many communities also endured unusually warm nights, offering little respite for residents after hot afternoons.

Los Angeles heat wave keeps October near record levels
Los Angeles remains unusually hot as Southern California’s October heat wave continues.

This latest high followed a demanding Monday that set multiple temperature records across the region. Downtown Los Angeles reached 104°F, surpassing its October 5 record of 101°F. In addition, Woodland Hills hit 106°F, while Anaheim and Long Beach each registered 104°F. Los Angeles International Airport experienced 101°F during that period. The widespread heat affected both inland valleys and coastal communities, where Pacific air usually helps keep daytime temperatures lower than areas farther from the ocean.

Although Tuesday saw a slight decrease from Monday’s peak, temperatures remained well above normal. Downtown Los Angeles recorded 21 degrees above its typical October 6 high of 80°F. Burbank Airport also reached 101°F, roughly 20 degrees above seasonal norms. Elevated overnight temperatures further intensified the heat strain in many neighborhoods. This ongoing warmth reduces the cooling period for buildings and outdoor spaces, leaving less time for temperature relief before the heat builds again the next day.

Persistent high pressure fuels broad October heat pattern

A consistent ridge of high pressure has maintained the prolonged heat wave across Southern California. The sinking air beneath this system elevates temperatures, while weak offshore winds limit the cooling effects typically brought by coastal breezes. Warm ocean conditions have also lessened the marine layer’s strength near beaches. Collectively, these factors have helped sustain unusually high temperatures over a large region, rather than restricting the hottest weather to inland valleys and desert areas.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health advised residents to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, minimize strenuous activities during peak heat hours, and utilize air-conditioned spaces when available. They also encouraged checking on vulnerable populations, such as older adults, young children, and those lacking reliable cooling sources. The warmer nights further elevate risks, as the body has less time to recover before temperatures rise again during the day.

Expectations for cooling temperatures later in the week

Temperature levels are projected to begin declining later on Thursday, with more noticeable cooling expected as the weekend nears. Downtown Los Angeles might still see highs in the upper 90s on Wednesday before the hottest conditions subside. Burbank may again approach triple digits toward the end of this heat event. Subsequently, temperatures are forecasted to approach seasonal averages in many parts of the region, with highs dropping into the 70s and 80s. There is also a possibility of light showers developing on Sunday.

Alongside the cooling trend, the coast faces dangerous surf conditions and strong rip currents. Portions of the Ventura County coastline remain under a coastal flood advisory through Friday, as high tides could cause minor flooding at low-lying beaches, harbor walkways, and nearby parking areas. These coastal hazards add to the concerns following several days of extreme heat and warm nights. Cooler weather later this week would bring the region closer to typical October conditions, ending an unusual early-month heatwave.
