MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the options for the Gemini model available to free personal accounts beginning October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will still have access to Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. However, they will no longer be able to access Flash or Pro under the new structure. The company provided details about these updates in the revised support documentation for its consumer AI service. These rules specifically apply to personal Google accounts, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers subscribed to Google AI Plus will keep access to Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes are implemented. Yet, their subscription will no longer include Pro access. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, the company states that impacted users will be notified via email about when their access will change. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Flash-Lite functions as an efficient Gemini model tailored for quick responses and everyday tasks. Flash offers extra capabilities while maintaining rapid reply times across various requests. Pro is designed for more intensive workloads, such as complex mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google explains that this model can handle text, files, images, and videos, while applying more advanced reasoning. Responses from Pro may also take longer than those generated by other Gemini models due to increased processing requirements.
Access to wider models remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is also rolling out adjustable effort settings—low, medium, and high—for models within a user’s plan. Higher effort settings enable a model to allocate more resources for producing detailed responses, which also depletes the user’s usage allowance faster. Customers on AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will gain access to Deep Think, a feature optimized for complex reasoning. Google describes Deep Think as an option that applies maximum parallel reasoning to manage intricate requests.
These restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based restrictions, with allowances refreshing every five hours until weekly limits are exhausted. The system factors in prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Premium features and advanced models tend to consume allowances more quickly than basic requests. On July 24, Google extended these usage-limit rules to users under 18.
Different usage caps for Google AI subscription tiers
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the standard usage limits. AI Plus members enjoy twice the normal allowance, while AI Pro users benefit from four times that amount. AI Ultra offers either five times or 20 times the AI Pro limit, depending on the specific plan. Features such as Deep Research, media creation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are able to utilize larger portions of these allowances. Paid subscriptions therefore come with increased usage limits and broader model access.
The October updates apply solely to Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not influence other Google AI services. Work and educational accounts follow separate access policies, and developer services are governed by their own rules. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app up to date as the new access structure becomes active.
