Wall Street Experiences Decline Following Federal Reserve Rate Hike by 25 Basis Points

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – U.S. stocks finished lower on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points. This decision pushed the federal funds target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 631.21 points, or 1.21%, closing at 51,461.90. The S&P 500 fell 34.55 points, or 0.46%, finishing at 7,551.81. The Nasdaq Composite ended 3.16 points lower at 25,978.42.

The central bank approved this rate hike unanimously in a 12-0 vote during its September policy session. It marked the first increase since July 2023. Officials indicated that economic activity remained robust, with consumer spending holding strong, productivity growth steady, and capital investment maintaining momentum. Additionally, the Fed reported that job creation kept pace with labor force growth and that unemployment remained largely unchanged.

Inflation persisted above the Fed’s 2% target as policymakers assessed economic conditions at their September 15-16 meeting. The rate hike followed a period of stable borrowing costs after earlier cuts, signaling a shift from the policy stance that had been in place for over three years. U.S. equities declined into the close, while Treasury yields increased across various maturities. Shares of smaller companies also saw declines during the session.

Federal Reserve projections indicate higher rates in 2026

Economic forecasts updated by the Fed now project a median federal funds rate of 4.1% by the end of 2026, compared to the 3.8% median estimate provided in June. Officials also forecast median rates of 4.1% for 2027 and 3.9% for 2028. These projections reflect individual officials’ assessments of suitable policy conditions and do not determine future rate decisions, which are considered at scheduled Fed meetings.

The median forecast for real U.S. gross domestic product growth was raised to 2.3% for 2026 from 2.2%. The unemployment rate forecast was lowered to 4.1% from 4.3%. The policymakers expect headline personal consumption expenditures inflation to be 3.7% this year, with a median forecast for core PCE inflation — excluding food and energy — at 3.4%.

Yields on Treasury securities climb as major indexes retreat

Following the rate decision and updated economic outlooks, Treasury yields increased. The two-year yield rose to approximately 4.73%, while the 10-year benchmark reached about 5.00%. The Russell 2000 index of smaller firms declined roughly 0.4%, ending at 2,858.81. Across major U.S. exchanges, declining stocks outnumbered advancers as markets absorbed the latest official data on interest rates, inflation, and growth prospects.

Despite Wednesday’s downturn, major U.S. stock indexes still hold gains for 2026. The S&P 500 remains roughly 10.3% higher for the year through the close. The Dow has increased about 7.1%, while the Nasdaq has gone up approximately 11.8%. The session renewed focus on U.S. interest rates, inflation figures, and Treasury yields. The Federal Reserve continues to evaluate incoming economic data at its upcoming scheduled policy meetings.
